sony has a new home :) :(

What do I say? I am sad but really happy. We met with a family last weekend that was interested in adopting Sony. They have two sons, 11 and 13. They met Sony, played with him a little, then drove back to their home. It didn't take long for them to call back and say that the boys could barely sit still in anticipation of their mom calling and telling us they wanted Sony. They had been looking for dog for the last year, we had been contemplating giving Sony away for the last year. All it took was one little prayer last week and this week our prayer was completely answered. I'm still sad, but seeing Sony in his new home, with a big yard, his own pillow downstairs, free reign of a lot of the house, and his bed upstairs in the bedroom of his new 13 year old best friend, I can't help but be so thankful that God answers even what can seem to us like small insignificant prayers. Good night, Sony, we'll miss you!

I predict the world will end...

Quick thought. What would be the point of predicting the world will end? It is basically a lose, lose situation. If you are right, no one will congratulate you cause, well, we will all be dead. If you are wrong, you will probably lose a little credibility, especially if making predictions is your job. If there are statistics on predictions, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that to date, 100% of people who have predicted the end of the world have been wrong. Hmmm, I would leave that one alone and maybe try to predict a war or a time of peace or when the robots are going to take over the world (well, i guess that one is a 0 percenter also as Flight of the Conchords tried to predict this happenning in the year 2000, unless... the matrix is true and it has already happenned!!!). Here is my prediction.... I predict, no one will read this!

Sports: 49ers training camp is underway

I have always wanted to be doing something involving sports. I always hoped I would be doing it for my living but that hasn't quite happened yet and maybe never will so here is my chance to start my own sports column. Not a bad job actually, since I have no deadlines and can never be fired. Well, here we go.

49ers training camp is underway

The 49ers on paper are much improved from a year ago when they weren't that far from the playoffs (on paper). They have upgraded their defense with the additions of Nate Clements (Buffalo), Aubrayo Franklin (Baltimore), Michael Lewis (Philly), Tully Banta-Cain (NE), and Patrick Willis (Rookie). They definitely needed the upgrades after watching them get rolled quite a few games last year. They also got a new d-coordinator, Greg Manusky, who is taking his first job calling the defensive plays in the NFL. You would think they have to be better than last year, right. The question will continue to be the pass rush. Will Banta-Cain be the man? It is hard to know since he was a backup till late in the season last year, and although he came on strong and appeared to be a good pass rushing linebacker, he needs to do it for a complete season. Will Manny Lawson begin to show some of his sack expertise he displayed in college? If there were no expectations surrounding him last year, I would say he had a real nice year for a rookie, however, being a fan who was looking at him helping the pass rush right away, I am trying not to be disappointed just yet. I am hoping he shows some flashes this year and picks up at least 7-8 sacks or so that don't come on broken plays. We will get to see Brandon Moore starting for a full year also a year removed from leading the team in tackles. The bottom line is that "on paper", I get real excited about this defense, and I am hoping Greg Manusky can have the confidence of the head coach, so that Nolan won't be distracted by trying to second guess or call plays for the defense on gameday.

There isn't quite as much excitement about the improvements on offense and there are some questions but there is still some optimism. There is another first year, unproven coordinator. There is a new, hopefully not disgruntled(Antonio Bryant) #1 receiver in Darrell Jackson. There is a 3rd year quarterback who we hope will continue to progress and at least be a top 10 quarterback in the league. You got the stud in Frank Gore, and then who knows what else after that at running back (although I am rooting for Michael Robinson to have a breakout year). We hopefully have a stud in Vernon Davis at tight end and I also get excited about seeing Delanie Walker get out there and catch some passes. All in all, there is some young talent and I can't wait to see some production.

I feel like this is the first year to be excited, not just to see new players, but to actually see some wins. Go NINERS!

daddyhood

What can I say about daddyhood? How about "I absolutely love it"! It kind of just feels right. I wake up and see a little boy smiling at me. I think about him when I have to go to work but know someday he will understand why daddy has to be gone all day. If I get to see him at lunch, I love the simple pleasure of changing a diaper or giving him a bottle. I can't wait to come home each day and see his face light up with a little smile when I walk through the door. Then I get to have our nighttime routine of story time and little hugs and kisses with this smiling little guy.

There was a funny yet sad moment on the "The Office" tv show when the main characer "Michael Scott" is showing an old movie of himself talking about what he wants to do when he grows up. He says he wants to get married and have 100 kids so that he will have 100 friends. Even though fake, it would be sad to think of a kid who felt he needed to have kids to have friends. So anyways, my point is that it is so neat to think that I have this boy for the rest of my life that I get to love him and get to tell him each day that "I love him" and "I will always love him". It is such an example of the ultimate relationship that I can have with those around me. Having people in your life know that you love them and you will always love them (without them being blood-related to you), how amazing could that be. I don't know if anyone around me feels that way, but that is the kind of love that I want to show.

the birth

Ok, it has been over a month now and I wanted to catch up on some of what has happenned in my life.   I will do a couple posts to get myself up to date, so this one is "the birth".

April 5th

Dina's water breaks the morning of April 5th.  Contractions weren't too strong right away so we didn't check into the hospital till the afternoon.

Strong contractions start in the evening.  I won't go into all the exciting details, but about 14 hours of labor later (3 hours pushing!!) and we arrive at our exciting moment.  Keep in mind, we had already decided (as I hear a lot of people do in these moments) that he is our first and last child :) so we are, let me say, very eager to see our brand new baby.

So, here we go, we can see right away (and you can see from the photos) this kid has a full head of hair.  The final pushes are over and the baby is being brought up for mommy to see.  Oh, and before we get to the moment, did I mention we had an ultrasound many months before and we got a 85%-90% chance that it was going to be a girl?  So, without anyone saying a word, like "Congratulations, you have a beautiful baby XXXX!", I get to be the first one to notice that this baby does not look like a girl!  To quote myself, I think I said in a half questioning, half totally ecstatic voice, "It's a boy!"  My tone was probably pretty annoying to everyone in the room because it sounded like I was basically telling everyone in the room, "umm, am I the only one who noticed that this is a HE", as if it wasn't plainly stated by the anatomy he came with.

From there, as Dina and I were both crying from the emotion of our baby finally arriving and the long labor being over, we went straight to laughter.  I have never laugh/cried so hard in my life.  It was all joy as we both were so happy to have a boy even though we were prepared for a girl.

big fish, little fish

Random thought of the day...

So I was eating some orange flavored dried cranberries (one of my new favorite snacks, which is pretty amazing since i don't eat a lot of fruit) and I realized that I like to eat them one little piece at a time.  If I get a big clump of them together and take a bite, it kinda grosses me out.

At a Japanese restaurant here in town, I used to order sashimi, except they don't cut the fish up very much leaving each piece extremely large and, not having mastered the skill of using my chopsticks as a knife, I end up feeling sick to my stomach with a huge piece of fish in my mouth(I am also annoyed because I can't get much rice in my mouth with all that fish -- I view most food as a side order to my rice anyways).

I can't think of anything that I like better when I take a big bite and these foods definitely make me like them less when consuming larger bites.

Thank you for your time.

we graduated!

Well, maybe there wasn't a graduation ceremony, but we did complete 6 weeks of birthing/baby classes with perfect attendance. What did we learn? Well, we know that the closest parking places are on the right side of the hospital and even though they say they are reserved, the fine print on the sign says that the are available after 4pm! Seriously though, we did learn more than that. We gained quite a bit of knowledge that will help us be better prepared (even though we are trying to face the reality that we won't be totally prepared for what is to come). One of our fellow classmates didn't quite make it through the class and they brought their little one to our last class for show and tell. It definitely made it all seem that much more real! They were happy to share that what they learned during the class really did help so I think I need to do some refresher studying over the next couple days/weeks! She could come anytime now so hopefully my next post will be a pic!

baby land

Well, the baby room is painted yellow, the crib is put together, we just got the glider/rocker, the diaper dandy (i mean champ) is in place, putting the carseat in today, and Mya (or Maia) continues to move around and make mommy uncomfortable.  I guess this means we are ready (outside of a couple major projects at work I need to tie up)?  We are ready (at least practically) to enter the world of baby land!

1 - how to share your blog with the fam, the fufam that is

So here we go. I am making this blog partly for me to post things about my oh so cool life, but also to show family how they can post stuff to the fufam homepage. If you create a blogspot blog, I can pull a feed to the fufam homepage which will show the latest postings to your blog. I am hoping to make it a page to link to all of our lives. I will do the same thing with photos, so that if you post your photos to google using your fufam email address, I can pull links to it also. Let me know if you want help doing it!
